The stylists

Five people, six chairs and one rule: you meet your stylist at the mirror and hear the price before anything is cut or mixed. Here's who does what, so you can book the right chair the first time.

Founder and director colourist

AdaMarram

"Colour is the part people remember. The cut is the part they live with. We give both the same time."

Ada trained in Sydney, coloured for a decade on Darby Street and opened Marram in 2017 with two chairs. There are six now, and she still takes clients on Thursdays and Saturdays.

Marram began as two chairs and a rule Ada brought from Darby Street: the client hears the price at the mirror, before the bowl comes out. Every stylist who has joined since works the same way, and it's why our menu is printed by stylist level rather than as a range with "from" in front of everything.

She still colours two days a week, and still checks the graduate colour book every morning before the first client sits down.

Who to book

Every stylist cuts and colours. These are the things each one is asked for most.

  1. A woman with a long, high black ponytail, posing against a pink wall

    Jess

    Senior stylist

Jess does most of the blonde that leaves this salon. She paints balayage freehand, tones to the client's skin rather than to a swatch, and is the one who tells you when a lighter blonde will cost your lengths more than it's worth.

Ask for Jess for Balayage, toner refreshes, long hair that needs to stay long

  2. A woman with long dark hair and pale eyes, framed by white blossom

    Lena

    Director stylist

Lena cuts with a ruler-straight eye: blunt bobs, heavy fringes, one-length cuts that grow out evenly. She also takes the colour corrections, from box-dye orange to banding from three salons ago, and plans them over as many visits as the hair needs.

Ask for Lena for Bobs and blunt cuts, colour correction, a total change

  3. A woman with long dark hair leaning on a black balcony railing

    Mika

    Senior stylist

Mika cuts curly and wavy hair dry, curl by curl, so the shape is set while the curl is doing what it does every day. Bring your hair as you normally wear it, unbrushed, and expect to be asked how you style it on a humid morning.

Ask for Mika for Curly and wavy cuts, growing out a bad cut, curl routines

  4. A man with thick dark hair in a black roll-neck, one hand at his collar

    Tom

    Graduate stylist

Tom is qualified and in his first years on the floor, which makes him the most affordable chair in the salon. He does the men's cuts and fades, the Saturday blow-dries, and colour with a senior checking every mix.

Ask for Tom for Men's cuts and fades, blow-dries, a first visit on a budget

Booking a stylist: your questions

Can I ask for a particular stylist?

Yes. Name them in your booking request and we'll book you with them, or tell you their next free time if they're full. If you'd rather we choose, tell us what you're after and we'll match you to the stylist who does the most of it.

What's the difference between a graduate, senior and director stylist?

Experience, and the price follows it. Graduates are qualified and in their first years on the floor, with every colour checked by a senior. Seniors have five years or more behind the chair. Directors are our most experienced colourists and cutters.

Are your stylists qualified?

Yes. Every stylist here holds a Certificate III in Hairdressing, the qualification the NSW Hairdressers Act 2003 requires of anyone cutting or colouring hair for a fee.

Who should I book for curly hair?

Mika. She cuts curly and wavy hair dry, curl by curl, and a curly cut with her is 75 minutes. Come with your hair washed and styled the way you normally wear it, with no product brushed through.

Who should I book to fix a colour that's gone wrong?

Lena takes our colour corrections. She'll look at the hair at a consultation first, do a strand test, and tell you honestly whether it's one visit or several, and what each one costs, before anything is mixed.

Does the founder still take clients?

Yes. Ada Marram takes clients on Thursdays and Saturdays as a director colourist. Her book fills first, so ask early in the week if you'd like her.
