Keratin treatment
Newcastle

A keratin treatment at Marram Hair smooths frizz for months rather than days, and we only use a product after reading its safety data sheet. It sits with three shorter treatments we book every week in The Junction: bond repair, a scalp treatment and a gloss.

What a keratin treatment does

A keratin treatment is a smoothing service, not a straightener. The product is combed through, left to develop, then sealed in with a blow-dry and a flat iron. Afterwards your hair dries faster, frizz drops away, and it holds a blow-dry through a humid Newcastle afternoon. Curls are softened rather than removed; if you want them gone, it's not the right service, and we'll say so.

Most of our keratin clients come in for one of three reasons: frizz that undoes every blow-dry, thick hair that takes forty minutes to dry, or a long summer of salt and sun that has left the lengths rough.

How we choose the product

SafeWork NSW has warned that some keratin products release formaldehyde when they're heated, and that labels don't always say so. The Poisons Standard limits free formaldehyde in hair products to 0.05 per cent. We read the safety data sheet of every smoothing product before it comes into the salon, use only ones within that limit, and run the treatment with ventilation and extraction on. If you have asthma or a sensitive scalp, tell us at the consultation.

The three shorter treatments

Bond repair is the one we add most. Lightening and heat break bonds inside the hair, and a bond repair treatment rebuilds some of them. It's mixed into a colour or booked on its own, about thirty minutes.

Scalp treatment is a cleanse, a gentle exfoliation and a massage, for a scalp that's oily, flaky or simply tired. It's forty-five minutes, and the blow-dry is included.

Gloss is a sheer, low-commitment colour that adds shine and corrects tone, often booked between balayage appointments to keep blonde from turning brassy.

Booking a treatment

Every treatment starts with a consultation at the mirror, and the price is set before we start. All our prices, by stylist level, are on the services and prices page. We're on Kenrick Street in The Junction, a few minutes from Merewether and the rest of inner Newcastle. When you're ready, request a booking.

Treatments: your questions

How much does a keratin treatment cost in Newcastle?

At Marram Hair a keratin smoothing treatment starts at $280 with a graduate stylist, $320 with a senior and $360 with a director. Those are from-prices for shoulder-length hair; long or very thick hair takes more product and time, and we tell you the exact price at the consultation.

How long does a keratin treatment last?

Usually three to five months. It fades gradually as you wash, so how you look after it matters: sulphate-free shampoo, and no swimming or tight ponytails in the first few days. It doesn't grow out with a line, so there's no rush to redo it.

Do keratin treatments contain formaldehyde?

Some smoothing products release formaldehyde when they're heated, and SafeWork NSW has warned that labels don't always show it. So we read the safety data sheet before we use any product, use only ones within the Australian limit for free formaldehyde in hair products, and work with ventilation and extraction on.

Can I have a keratin treatment if my hair is coloured?

Yes. We usually colour first and smooth straight after, or a week later, so the heat seals the colour rather than shifting it. If your hair is very lightened, we'll do a strand test first and may suggest a bond repair treatment instead.

What does a bond repair treatment do?

It's added to a colour, or booked on its own, to rebuild some of the internal bonds that lightening and heat break down. Hair that has been bleached often feels softer and snaps less afterwards. It's $45 to $60 and takes about thirty minutes.

Can I have a keratin treatment while pregnant?

We suggest talking to your doctor first, and many clients choose to wait. A gloss or a bond repair treatment involves no smoothing heat or formaldehyde-releasing products, and can be a good in-between.
