Merewether is next door. From the ocean baths it's 1.9 km by road to Kenrick Street, about six minutes in the car, and a good share of our Saturday book arrives with sand still on their feet.

Salt, sun and a south-easterly every afternoon. Merewether hair works hard, so we colour and cut for it.

Merewether clients bring us the beach in their hair: ocean-baths chlorine on top of salt, summer sun on the lengths, and a wind that undoes a blow-dry by the time you reach the car. We tone blonde a little deeper here so it holds against the water, cut curls dry so they sit right when the humidity comes in, and send people home with a plan for between visits rather than a bag of products.

Balayage that survives the baths
A slightly deeper toner and a bond builder in the lightener, so blonde fades softer through a summer of swims.
Curly cuts for humid days
Cut dry, curl by curl, so the shape you see in the chair is the shape you get on a muggy February afternoon.
Grey blending for the walk-and-coffee crowd
Soft lights through grey rather than a solid root line, for people who would rather not book every four weeks.

A salon for the beach end of Newcastle

Merewether is the suburb we see most of. It shares our postcode, 2291, and the ocean baths are 1.9 km from our door. So we know Merewether hair well: lighter at the ends from the sun, dry from the baths, and expected to look good from a 6am swim to a dinner on Darby Street.

That changes how we work. A Merewether balayage gets a toner chosen to fade softly in salt water, and a bond builder in the lightener, because blonde that's swum in three times a week needs all the strength it can keep. Curly cuts are done dry, so they hold through the humid afternoons off the water. And grey blending is soft enough that the regrowth doesn't send you back in a month.

What Merewether books with us

Most Merewether clients come in for balayage, usually every three to five months with a toner in between. The rest is cuts, curly cuts and a growing number of soft grey blends. Prices for all of it, by stylist level, are on the services and prices page.

If you're new to colour with us, we book a five-minute skin test first, at least 48 hours ahead.

Questions from Merewether

Is there a hair salon close to Merewether Beach?

Marram Hair is on Kenrick Street in The Junction, about 1.9 km by road from the Merewether Ocean Baths. It's around six minutes in the car, and an easy walk if you have the time.

Will ocean swimming fade my balayage?

Salt water, the chlorine in the ocean baths and sun all fade toner faster than a normal week does. For Merewether swimmers we tone slightly deeper and suggest a toner refresh at about six weeks rather than eight. Wetting your hair with fresh water before a swim helps too.

Can I walk from Merewether to the salon?

Yes. The baths are 1.9 km from Kenrick Street by road, so much of Merewether is a comfortable walk. Plenty of our Saturday clients walk over, then get a coffee in The Junction after.

Where do I park if I drive from Merewether?

There's street parking around The Junction village, within the time limits on the signs. A colour appointment can run three hours, so check the sign and pick a street with a longer limit if you're booked for balayage.

Do you cut curly hair for people in Merewether?

Yes. Mika, one of our senior stylists, cuts curly hair dry, curl by curl, so it holds its shape in the humidity off the beach. A curly cut is 75 minutes and starts at $95 with a graduate stylist.

Are you open on Saturdays for Merewether clients?

Yes, Saturday from 8am to 3pm, and Thursday until 8pm for anyone who works in town. We're closed Sunday and Monday. Saturday mornings book out first, so send a request early in the week.
