Bar Beach is the closest suburb on our books, 1.2 km by road from its centre. A hair salon Bar Beach can walk to, and most of our clients from there do.

Kenrick Street, The Junction2 minutes from Bar Beach by car

Bar Beach is our nearest neighbour, so the blow-dry you leave with is still the blow-dry you get home with.

Bar Beach takes its name from a rock pool once called The Bar, and the northern stretch of sand is the one locals call Susan Gilmore Beach, after an American clipper wrecked there in 1884. Between the beach, the Reid Park tennis courts and the Empire Park bowling green, a lot of Bar Beach hair spends the week tied up, salted or under a cap. We mostly see it in short visits: a toner between colours, a blow-dry before dinner, a trim after a swim.

Toner between swims at the Susan Gilmore end
Salt pulls tone out of lightened hair, so swimmers from the northern end book a 30-minute toner between balayage visits instead of a full colour.
Layers that sit right after a cap comes off
Reid Park tennis means hair pulled back under a cap for hours, so we cut layers that fall back into place when it is let down.
Walk-over blow-dries from the Art Deco blocks
Bar Beach's Art Deco units are close enough to stroll over for a 45-minute blow-dry and walk home before lunch.

A hair salon Bar Beach can walk to

Bar Beach and The Junction share a border. That makes Marram a hair salon Bar Beach clients reach on foot more often than not, and it changes what they book: shorter, more frequent visits, fitted around a swim or tennis at Reid Park.

Sea water and sun take toner out of lightened hair faster than anything else in an ordinary week. So instead of a full colour every couple of months, many Bar Beach clients keep one balayage going for four or five months and drop in for a toner at the halfway point. Jess, a senior stylist, looks after most of that blonde.

What Bar Beach books with us

Most bookings are blow-dries, toners and cuts. A cut with a blow-dry takes an hour and costs $75 at graduate level, $95 at senior or $120 at director. Long hair that has spent a summer in the surf usually does better with a bond repair added to the colour: 30 minutes, and $45, $50 or $60 depending on the stylist. Every price is on the price list.

Getting here from the beach

The walk is short enough to do in thongs. Merewether, Cooks Hill and The Hill have pages of their own, the rest are on the hair salon Newcastle page, and you can send a booking request any time.

Questions from Bar Beach

Is there a hair salon within walking distance of Bar Beach?

Yes. The centre of Bar Beach is 1.2 km by road from us, about two minutes by car, and near enough to walk.

How long does toner last if I swim most days?

On blonde that goes in the sea several times a week, expect toner to soften noticeably in four to six weeks, sooner over summer. A toner or gloss takes 30 minutes: $55, $60 or $70 by stylist level.

Can I book just a blow-dry before a night out?

Yes. A blow-dry is about 45 minutes, from $55 at graduate level, more for very long or thick hair. Friday runs until 5:30pm.

What time do you open on Saturday?

8am, and we close at 3pm. The first chairs go quickly, so request one a few days ahead.

How much does balayage cost at Marram?

Balayage, toner included, is from $260 at graduate level, $310 at senior and $370 at director, about three hours. Length and thickness move the price, and we confirm it before mixing.

Is a skin test needed before I have colour?

Yes, if it's your first colour with us: a five-minute test on the skin, two days or more before your appointment, as the dye manufacturers direct.
