Hair extensions
Newcastle

Hair extensions at Marram Hair are tape extensions, fitted in The Junction, Newcastle, after a free consultation and colour match. Thin wefts of human hair are taped close to your own roots and moved up every 6 to 8 weeks as your hair grows. You know the full cost, fitting and upkeep, before you commit.

How tape hair extensions work

Tape hair extensions are thin wefts of human hair with a strip of tape along the top. We part your hair into fine horizontal sections and sandwich a small section of your own hair between two wefts, close to the root. The tape sits flat against the head, so with the hair down nobody sees them, and you can still wear it in a low ponytail.

A full set adds length, thickness or both. Plenty of clients only want a few wefts to fill out fine ends or give a short cut more weight while it grows. How many you need, and how long, is what the consultation decides.

The free consultation and colour match

Every set of hair extensions at Marram starts with a free thirty-minute consultation. We look at your hair and scalp first, because tape needs healthy hair to hold on to. If your hair is very fine, breaking, or shedding more than usual, extensions add weight it may not be able to carry, and we'll tell you that honestly.

Then the colour match. Few heads of hair are one colour from root to tip, so we match against your lengths, often blending two shades so the extensions disappear into your own colour. We measure the length you want and how full you want it, and tell you the exact price.

If you're planning a colour change, do it first. We match the extensions to the colour you'll be wearing, so book your hair colour or balayage before the fitting.

What hair extensions cost

Here's what tape hair extensions cost at Marram, with nothing left for the desk:

  • Consultation and colour match: free, about thirty minutes.
  • Tape extensions, hair and fitting: from $650, about two hours.
  • Move-up, every 6 to 8 weeks: from $180, about ninety minutes.

Extension prices are the same whichever stylist fits them. The "from" moves with how much hair you need: a full set of long hair costs more than a few wefts to thicken the ends. Over a year, you'd usually book six to eight move-ups, so budget roughly $1,080 to $1,440 for those on top of the first fitting. Every other price is on our services and prices page.

Move-ups every 6 to 8 weeks

Your own hair keeps growing, so after 6 to 8 weeks the tapes have moved down with it and start to show, tangle and pull. At a move-up we release each weft with tape remover, clean off the old adhesive, re-tape the same hair and refit it back up near the root. The hair you paid for at the fitting usually goes back in, so a move-up costs far less than a new set.

Don't stretch it. Tapes left too long are the main cause of matting at the root, and the main way extensions damage your own hair. We'll book your next move-up before you leave.

How to care for hair extensions

Tape extensions are low maintenance, but they're not no maintenance. What we ask:

  • Wait 48 hours after the fitting before you wash, so the tape sets.
  • Brush from the ends up, with a soft brush, holding the hair at the root with your other hand.
  • Keep conditioner, masks and oils off the tapes, from the mid-lengths down only.
  • Dry the roots fully after every wash, so the tapes don't stay damp against your scalp.
  • Sleep with a loose plait or a low ponytail to stop tangles overnight.
  • Keep heat off the tapes. Straighteners and curling irons are fine on the lengths.
  • After the beach or the pool, rinse straight away. Salt and chlorine dry out extension hair, which can't replace its own oils.

Booking hair extensions in The Junction

Start with the free consultation. Send a booking request for an extensions consult and colour match, and we'll find thirty minutes. If you'd like a cut to blend your own hair into the new length, it's often done at the fitting; see our women's haircut page. For dry, rough lengths before a fitting, a bond repair on our keratin and treatments page can help.

We're on Kenrick Street in The Junction, a couple of minutes' drive from Bar Beach and close to the rest of inner Newcastle.

Extensions: your questions

How much do hair extensions cost in Newcastle?

At Marram Hair, tape extensions start at $650 for the hair and the fitting, and a move-up every 6 to 8 weeks starts at $180. The consultation and colour match are free. A longer or fuller set takes more hair and costs more, and we give you the exact figure at the consultation, before any hair is ordered.

How long do tape hair extensions last?

Each fitting lasts 6 to 8 weeks, until your own hair has grown enough that the tapes need moving back up. With good care, the same hair can usually be re-taped and refitted at several move-ups. We check its condition every time and tell you when it's due to be replaced.

How do I care for hair extensions?

Wait 48 hours after fitting before the first wash. Brush from the ends up with a soft brush, holding the hair at the root. Keep conditioner and oils off the tapes, dry the roots fully after every wash, sleep with your hair in a loose plait, and keep straighteners and curling irons away from the tapes.

Will tape extensions damage my hair?

Fitted to hair that can carry them and moved up on time, they shouldn't. Damage usually comes from tapes left in too long, wefts that are too heavy for the hair, or extensions pulled out at home. That's why we check your hair and scalp at the consultation, and remove tapes only with remover, here.

Can I swim or colour my hair with extensions in?

You can swim, but tie your hair up, rinse the salt or chlorine out straight afterwards and dry the roots properly. Colour your own hair before the fitting, so we can match the extensions to the finished colour. Ask us before lightening extension hair: it doesn't recover the way growing hair can.

Do you fit other kinds of hair extensions?

No, only tape extensions. They lie flat, they're quick to fit and move up, and they come out cleanly with remover, which suits most of the clients who ask us about extensions. If tape isn't right for your hair, we'll say so at the free consultation rather than sell you something else.
