A hairdresser Cooks Hill has history with: Ada, our founder, coloured on Darby Street for a decade before opening Marram in 2017. We're 1.5 km by road from Cooks Hill, about three minutes in the car.

Kenrick Street, The Junction3 minutes from Cooks Hill by car

Ten years of Darby Street colour, moved three minutes away to a side street in The Junction.

Cooks Hill is terrace country: rows of Victorian terraces, turn-of-the-century timber cottages, corner pubs, and Darby Street, the eat street with about 25 cafes and restaurants. The suburb is named after Samuel Wellington Cook, and the Newcastle Region Art Gallery and the city library both sit on Laman Street. Cooks Hill clients tend to book colour around an evening out or an exhibition, and they want it to look considered rather than fresh from the salon.

Colour from a Darby Street colourist
Ada spent ten years colouring on Darby Street, and she still takes clients of her own every Thursday and Saturday.
Root colour before a Thursday dinner
Thursdays run until 8pm, so a 90-minute root colour after work still leaves time for a table on Darby Street.
A cut between Laman Street and Darby Street
A precision cut with Lena takes an hour with the blow-dry, enough to fit between a morning at the gallery and lunch on the eat street.

A hairdresser Cooks Hill knows from Darby Street

Ada Marram coloured on Darby Street for ten years before opening Marram in 2017 with two chairs. There are six now, in The Junction. So if you were looking for a hairdresser on Darby Street, we aren't on it, but the colourist who spent a decade there is three minutes away.

Cooks Hill is a suburb of terrace streets, galleries and late dinners, and the colour it books follows the evening rather than the morning. A Thursday root colour after work. A gloss before an opening at the gallery on Laman Street. Thursday stays open until 8pm for exactly that kind of appointment.

What Cooks Hill books

Hair colour and precision cuts make up most of it. Lena, our director stylist, does the exact cuts and the colour corrections. Ada takes colour clients on Thursdays and Saturdays, and Jess, a senior stylist, looks after blonde and toning. The services page lists every price by stylist level.

Anyone new to colour with us has a skin test first, no later than 48 hours before the appointment, as the colour makers require. It takes five minutes.

Neighbours with their own pages

Bar Beach, The Hill and Hamilton each have a page, and the rest are listed on the Newcastle hub. When you're ready, request a time.

Questions from Cooks Hill

Is there a hairdresser near Darby Street?

We're 1.5 km by road from Cooks Hill, not on Darby Street itself, but our founder Ada coloured there for a decade before opening Marram.

Can I book with Ada if I used to see her on Darby Street?

Yes. Ada takes clients on Thursdays and Saturdays as our director colourist. Mention it when you request a booking and we'll put you in her chair.

How often should you get a haircut?

For a sharp bob or a short cut, every five to seven weeks keeps the line clean. Longer layers can usually go eight to twelve weeks. Cut and blow-dry: one hour, $75 to $120 by stylist level.

Do you have late appointments for people who work in town?

Thursday is our late night, open until 8pm. A root colour takes about 90 minutes and costs $95 to $130 depending on the stylist, so a 6pm start still finishes in time for dinner.

What does colour correction cost?

Colour correction is charged by the hour, from $110 at graduate level to $150 at director. Lena, our director stylist, plans a big correction over more than one visit so the hair stays in good condition.

How do I look after coloured hair between visits?

Wash in cool water, use a shampoo made for coloured hair, and turn the heat styling down. If your colour is blonde, a toner or gloss at the halfway point keeps it from going brassy.
